Professor Chen received his Ph.D. in 2005 from Stanford University with John I. Brauman. Following his Ph.D., he had two 

postdoctoral appointments including Texas A&M University with Paul S. Cremer, and Harvard University with George 

M. Whitesides. In 2011, Dr. Chen joined Boston University as an assistant professor in Chemistry and later in Material Science and 

Engineering. The primary interests of his laboratory, which is located at and supported by BU Photonic Center, is in the area of the 

surface chemistry of soft materials. He has published more than 30 peerreviewed articles and holds three US patents and provisional 

patents.
